The importance of a Legionella Risk Assessment

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH regulation, legionnaires disease is an identifiable risk and it’s a legal requirement to undertake a suitable and specific legionella risk assessment. The aim of our Legionella Risk Assessment is to review the water system at your premises with regards to the risks associated with the potential growth of legionella bacteria to staff and visitors at a surgery following the Department of Health Guidelines.

Whilst you don’t need a Legionella Risk Assessment if you only have a water storage system, it is a legal requirement to have a written risk assessment if you have five or more employees.

During the Legionella Risk Assessment process, a competent health and safety professional will visually inspect your site to assess the water systems. Hot and cold-water storage tanks are an important area to check, so the length of the Legionella assessment will depend on the accessibility, size and complexity of your site or building.

The Legionella consultant assigned to you, will also take a look at your records to review previous assessments, support you in undertaking the recommendations from previous reports, and help you identify areas that require improvement.
