Mirena Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUS).
Mirena Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUS) is a long-acting, reversible, progestogen-only method of contraceptive. It is inserted into the uterus and releases a small amount of levonorgestrel, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, over a period of up to 5 years. This intrauterine system is an effective hormonal contraceptive, delivering 20ug/day of levonorgestrel directly into the uterus.
The Mirena IUS consists of an inserter and a levonorgestrel intrauterine system. The inserter components include an insertion tube, plunger, flange, body, and slider. The structure of the Mirena IUS is composed of a hormone-elastomer core, which is either white or nearly white, positioned on a T-shaped body and enveloped in non-transparent tubing to control the discharge of levonorgestrel. The T-shaped body is white and features a loop at one end and a pair of arms at the opposite end. Brown-colored removal threads are connected to the loop. The T-frame of Mirena is infused with barium sulfate, making it detectable during an X-ray scan.
Features
- Idiopathic menorrhagia. Mirena may be particularly useful in women with idiopathic menorrhagia requiring (reversible) contraception.
- Treat Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) for up to 5 years.
- To be used as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for up to 4 years.
