Cefalexin 500mg Capsules (POM) are a prescription-only antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, such as those affecting the skin, urinary tract (UTIs), chest, throat, and ears. Branded versions like Keflex belong to the cephalosporin group and work by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria.
Usage Instructions
Swallow capsules whole with water, with or without food, typically 500mg every 8 hours for adults, adjusting for infection severity or kidney issues. Always complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve, to prevent resistance.
Side Effects
Common effects include diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting, which often resolve without stopping treatment. Serious effects may involve severe diarrhoea (possibly C. difficile-related), allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing issues), jaundice, or joint pain. Stop use and seek urgent help.
Precautions & Contraindications
Inform your doctor of penicillin/cephalosporin allergies, severe kidney problems, or ongoing diarrhoea. Not for viral infections; may affect blood/urine tests.
When to Seek Help
Stop immediately and get emergency care for anaphylaxis signs (face/lips/tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash) or bloody stools.
