Cefalexin 250mg Capsules

Cefalexin 250mg Capsules (POM) are a prescription-only cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone infections, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). They work by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria responsible for these conditions.

Usage Instructions

Swallow capsules whole with water; they can be taken with or without food. Common adult dosage is 250mg every 6 hours or 500mg every 12 hours (total 1-4g daily in divided doses), adjusted for infection severity, kidney function, or age. Always complete the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve, to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Side Effects

Common effects include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps, which often resolve without stopping treatment. Less common issues may involve indigestion, itching, or reversible liver changes.

Precautions & Contraindications

Do not take if allergic to cephalosporins or penicillins; inform your doctor of kidney problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or zinc supplement use (avoid concurrently as it reduces absorption). Not suitable for viral infections; may interfere with blood or urine tests.

When to Seek Help

Stop immediately and seek urgent medical care for severe diarrhoea (possibly bloody or C. difficile-related), allergic reactions (rash, itching, face/lips/tongue swelling, breathing difficulty), jaundice, or seizures. Contact a doctor for persistent side effects.
