Amoxicillin 250mg/5ml Sugar-Free 100ml Suspension POM x1

Amoxicillin 250mg/5ml Sugar-Free 100ml Suspension (POM) is a prescription-only antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, particularly in children or adults who cannot swallow tablets. This penicillin-class medicine works by killing sensitive bacteria and requires pharmacist reconstitution before use.

Usage Instructions

Reconstitute the powder with water as directed by a pharmacist; shake well before each dose and store the suspension in a refrigerator (do not freeze), using within 7 days. Administer doses evenly spaced (every 8 hours or as prescribed), typically 40-90mg/kg/day for children under 40kg in 2-3 divided doses, or as directed by a doctor—never exceed the prescribed amount. Always complete the full course to prevent resistance, even if symptoms improve.

Side Effects

Common effects include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and skin rash, which usually resolve without intervention. Serious reactions may involve severe allergic responses (hives, swelling, breathing difficulty), prolonged diarrhoea (possibly C. difficile), or jaundice—stop use and seek immediate medical help.

Precautions & Contraindications

Do not use if allergic to penicillin, cephalosporins, or ingredients like sodium benzoate and sorbitol (may cause allergic reactions or laxative effects). Inform your doctor of kidney issues, glandular fever, or upcoming urine/liver tests, as it may interfere; not suitable for viral infections.

When to Seek Help

Stop immediately and get emergency care for signs of anaphylaxis (swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing, severe rash) or bloody/persistent diarrhoea.

Commonly Treated Infections

  • Acute otitis media (middle ear infections) and sinusitis.
  • Acute bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia.
  • Dental abscesses, throat infections (e.g., tonsillitis), skin/soft tissue infections.
  • Urinary tract infections and others sensitive to amoxicillin.
