Myoglobin is present in both cardiac and skeletal muscle and will be released into the bloodstream when there is damage to either of these muscle types. An increase in serum myoglobin can be used in conjunction with other aspects of patient assessment in order to aid in the diagnosis of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI).
