Mirena Coil Intra-Uterine Device 20ug/24hrs IUS POM Rx1

Mirena Coil (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, IUS) is a prescription-only, long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) inserted into the uterus, releasing 20 micrograms of levonorgestrel daily for up to 8 years of pregnancy prevention. This T-shaped device also treats heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) for up to 5 years and supports hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for up to 4 years in suitable patients.

Mirena Coil Overview

The Mirena Coil features a hormone-elastomer core on a white T-frame (32mm width and length) with arms, loop, and brown removal threads, infused with barium sulfate for X-ray visibility; it's supplied sterile in a thermoformed blister pack with an inserter (tube, plunger, flange, slider). It delivers levonorgestrel locally to thicken cervical mucus, thin the uterine lining, and sometimes suppress ovulation, achieving over 99% effectiveness (pregnancy risk ~2 in 1,000 in year one).

Usage Instructions

Insertion must be performed by a trained healthcare professional using aseptic technique; check threads monthly post-insertion to confirm position. Replace after 8 years for contraception, 5 years for HMB, or 4 years for HRT; removal involves pulling threads gently. It's particularly useful for women with idiopathic menorrhagia needing reversible contraception.

Side Effects

Common initial effects include irregular/prolonged bleeding (often reducing over 3-6 months, potentially leading to amenorrhea), spotting, ovarian cysts, abdominal pain, nausea, or tender breasts. Serious risks encompass uterine perforation, expulsion, pelvic infection, or ectopic pregnancy; mood changes, hair loss, or fatigue may occur rarely - report persistent symptoms promptly.

Precautions & Contraindications

Not suitable for those with current/past breast cancer, liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, genital infections, or distorted uterine cavity; discuss allergies, HRT use, or breastfeeding. Effectiveness may be reduced by certain medications (e.g., enzyme inducers); regular follow-up is advised.

When to Seek Help

Seek immediate medical attention for severe pain, heavy bleeding, signs of infection (fever, unusual discharge), missing threads, exposed arms, or suspected pregnancy; stop use if thrombosis or stroke symptoms (chest pain, breathlessness, one-sided weakness) appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mirena Coil help with menopause?

Mirena can be used as part of HRT to manage menopausal symptoms by protecting the uterine lining from unopposed estrogen, for up to 4 years, but does not treat all menopause effects. Consult your doctor.

How long does it take for Mirena to work?

Contraceptive protection starts immediately if inserted within 7 days of menstrual cycle start; otherwise, use backup contraception for 7 days. Bleeding reduction may take 3-6 months.

What age should you stop using Mirena?

No strict age limit, but review after 8 years or at menopause confirmation; suitable until fertility is no longer desired, with professional assessment for older users.

What happens after 5 years with Mirena?

For HMB treatment, replace by 5 years; contraception lasts up to 8 years. Schedule removal/replacement with your clinician to maintain efficacy.

Is hair loss a side effect of Mirena?

Hair loss (alopecia) is a rare side effect reported in <1% of users; if persistent, consult your doctor to assess suitability.

Does the Mirena Coil affect your mood?

Mood changes or depression occur uncommonly; monitor and report significant effects, as hormonal IUS may influence some users.

Can Mirena Coil IUD make you tired?

Fatigue is not commonly listed but may relate to initial side effects like anaemia from bleeding or hormonal adjustment. Discuss with your healthcare provider.
