Medical Nitrile Gloves FAQs

What makes nitrile gloves medical grade?

Nitrile gloves become certified medical grade by passing strict regulatory tests for barrier protection against blood-borne pathogens and infectious materials.

Medical grade gloves must feature an AQL rating of 1.5 or lower to ensure a low pinhole defect rate and comply with BS EN 455 standards. For chemical protection, nitrile medical gloves in the UK are additionally tested to EN 374.

How thick are medical grade nitrile gloves?

Nitrile glove thickness varies between 2 and 10 mils. The thickness of nitrile gloves is often measured in mils. The conversion rate between mils and mm is 1 mil = 0.0254mm.

A typical medical glove usually sits between 3 – 4 mils. This thickness level keeps the gloves thin enough for tactile sensitivity, but still strong enough to withstand punctures.

WMS Blue Nitrile Gloves have a thickness from fingertip, palm and cuff between 0.077mm - 0.083mm. SafeDon SD912 blue nitrile gloves have a palm thickness of 0.06mm.

Are nitrile gloves a medical device?

Classification depends on who the glove is protecting. A glove protecting the patient is classed as a medical device and tested to EN 455.

A glove protecting the wearer from chemical or biological risks falls under PPE regulations and is tested to EN 374.

Because most medical gloves do both, it is common for gloves to be dual registered as both a medical device and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
